Business Meeting
…. An Exclusive to the ORC Wire Service (3 & 4 July)
An evaluation of the food booths for Croaker Festival ’09 revealed that ORC Command Central Barbecue Chiefs Sam Myers and George and Debora Steenson maintained a disciplined and rapid response Barbecue team. Food was plentiful; barbecue, hot; beans, savory; drinks, refreshing. The Barbecue joint was hoping during lunch and dinner. Note: ORC staff admirably performed their duties under duress. The adjacent St. Thomas Booth did their best in trying to smoke out the ORC staff while grilling St. Thomas’ sizzling burgers and chili dogs. ORC members who participated prevailed and can take pride in their hands-on fast food skills. Sam estimates that the club cleared over $2,000.
Service Above Self…
A topsy-turvy financial industry may motivate the weary of Wall Street to consider a position with the CIA…
Capitalizing on the financial crisis, the CIA has launched a recruiting campaign targeting Wall Streeters with an appeal to patriotism. So long as Wall Street’s financial analysts aren’t too worried about their own bottom line, the CIA might be the right match. Starting salaries range from about $50,000 to $100,000, depending on experience, though the agency says it can pay more for the right expertise. And the job is considerably more stable than a hedge fund these days.
If the response to the ads is any gauge, the CIA appears to have found an untapped vein. It sent “several hundred resumes” streaming into CIA’s Langley headquarters, said CIA spokeswoman Marie Harf. The agency projects it will receive a total of 180,000 applications this year. “Applicants with financial experience are strong candidates not only for economic analyst positions, but for the host of jobs we are hiring for at the CIA,” Harf said. “The CIA’s expansive national security portfolio includes topics such as counter-terrorism, counter-narcotics, and counter-proliferation — all areas that applicants with economic or financial backgrounds are ideally suited to cover.”
The CIA now produces a daily Economic Intelligence Brief for President Barack Obama, chronicling economic, political, and leadership developments that could impact the world economic order. CIA ranks already include a number of strong economic analysts. After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, a number of Wall Street types, particularly those who worked in lower Manhattan, flocked to the agency as part of the post-9/11 surge in interest.
