Captain Paul Del Rio

Coast Guard Auxiliary Update

Paul and wife Rose own the Paradise Cove Marina.  Currently Paul is one of Captain Larry’s instructors with Worldwide Marine Training.  Paul’s business interests have included these professions… real estate, restaurateur and mariner.  His Bachelor of Science degree in Aviation Marketing is from Worcester College.  Paul enjoys sailing and his activities in the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 20-03 meets the first Wednesday each month at Fire Station # 19 on Straight Road, Oriental, at 7:30 PM. The meetings — which focus on boating safety, navigation and GPS, for instance — are open to the public. New members welcomed. For more info, contact the Auxiliary’s Peg Witt at 252-249-3619 or chat with ORC members Tim Fowler and Bob Webster, both Auxiliary members.

  Auxiliary Advice…

-In order to be safe, mariners should monitor the weather forecast and be aware of surrounding conditions that can change quickly, especially during the summer months. The National Weather Service broadcasts marine weather forecasts regularly on VHF marine radio and lists the weather on the NWS website at www.nws.noaa.gov.

-Members of the boating public are encouraged to always wear a life jacket, have a working VHF-FM radio and electronic position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) on board and let someone know where they plan to be boating.

Must Read for all Tarponistas…

Published 2009 31 January

(Headwater Books)

Artist and ardent angler Bill Bishop tackles all aspects of tarpon fishing–from building leaders to bringing them in quickly. Each chapter explores the core aspects of tarpon fishing in detail, including step-by-step instructions for tying IGFA leaders, the nuances of finding, casting to, hooking, and fighting giant tarpon, and insights and tips for running the boat, seeing fish, and reading the fish’s behavior. In addition to the technical aspects, Bishop’s stories and humor take a look at the personal side of fishing, reminding us that despite the sometimes-serious undertaking of battling a 150-pound tarpon, fishing is still supposed to be fun. With over 120 detailed pen-and-ink illustrations and photos by Mark Hatter, this book will help anyone who wants to hook, and land, more silver kings.
