31 August Program

JR Hooten
Supporting the Rotary Foundation

A retired attorney, JR and wife Esther are Oriental residents who enjoy boating. The couple has four sons. JR has a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. His law degree is from Wake Forest University Law School.

In evaluating RI’s Foundation and the works the Foundation supports, your editor turned to The Council on Foundations website. The Council is a national nonprofit association of approximately 2,000 grant making foundations and corporations. As a leader in philanthropy, the Council strives to increase the effectiveness, stewardship, and accountability of its sector while providing members with the services and support they need for success.
Due to Rotary’s international status there exist a complexity of issues for its Foundation to consider. Language, communication, cultural differences, multiple legal systems, and disparate accounting practices are but a few of the challenges that can distinguish cross-border philanthropy from its domestic counterpart.
In 2009 Rotary International was awarded the Council’s Gold Award for Excellence in Communications/Public Policy Campaigns. The awards are classified by assets and the RI Foundation won over other foundations with assets of $101-$250 million.

Dinner Dance Benefit
Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust
St. Peter the Fisherman
Saturday 31 October 2009
Rotarians in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia are the sponsors of The CART Fund (Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust) dedicated to raising funds to provide the “seed” money for cutting edge, high impact research in hopes of finding a cure/prevention for Alzheimer’s disease.

President John announced this benefit for CART at the 24 August meeting. In addition to enjoying fine food and dancing, participants are encouraged to wear masks to the gala affair. John says more details will follow. Sounds like terrific fun supporting such a worthwhile cause. (If you are searching for some very handsome masks with local appeal, check out Circle 10 Art Gallery. Members are making dragon masks. Circle 10 artists constructed these masks from resin-infused muslin and hand painted/ decorated all of them.)

Pamlico Literacy Council Needs You
Sam Myers spoke to the thorny issue of local literacy. There is a great need for tutors in our local community. Check with Sam for more information. Training sessions will take place 10-12 September. Sessions are approximately four to six hours.

India Water Project Continues
Elizabeth Cordes, International Service Director, will continue the good work of past Director George Link. Expect updates from Elizabeth regarding matching funds from the District and RI.

Tent Rental Program…
Always Successful
Members know that when Hugh steps up to the podium the news is always good. At the 24 August meeting, Hugh turned over $770.00 to the Treasurer. These monies represented tent rentals for the weekend of 21 August. This was not small change! Hugh and the tent crew received thunderous applause from members.

MS 150 – September 12-13
Bike MS is a 2-day cycling event that raises funds to support people living with multiple sclerosis in Eastern North Carolina and throughout the United States. Money raised through this event funds MS research, programs, services, and advocacy. In 2008, over 2,300 cyclists and volunteers participated in the event and raised $1,507,363 to create a world free of MS. If you haven’t been to New Bern to see all the bikes take off from Union Point, don’t miss the 2009 MS 150. It is really a grant sight. ORC’s Ben Reese will be participating and he would appreciate contributions.

Pamlico County Fishes and Loaves
Roger Bullis updated members on the PCFLO project. In addition he is constructing a website for the organization where the public may comment. (Google Pamlico County Fishes and Loaves.) ORC members are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to Monday meetings.
