Jim Berry notified President John that the event will require two twenty by forty tents and fourteen tables (seating 10) as well as 125 chairs. Set up would be from Friday afternoon through Sunday. The Squadron requested that ORC prepare a shrimp boil for Saturday night (for non shrimpers, chicken barbeque.) President John and Jim B. will keep us informed.
-Messrs. Herlands, Link, Mitchell and Ms. Deb Iannitto attended the Mid-year meeting for Area 8 last Wednesday evening at the Chelsea Restaurant. Tasty entree, sparkling conversation and interesting narrative from Area 8’s clubs made for an informative evening. News included:

Tammy Childers (New Bern Breakfast Rotary) will coordinate the inbound Brazilian team’s visit (scheduled for 26 March) to the New Bern/Oriental area.

The 2010 Rotary Youth Leadership Awards conference is scheduled for Friday 9 April to Sunday 11 April at the 4-H complex, Columbia. This weekend has always been extremely popular with those Pamlico students selected to attend the event.
Rotary Theme…2010-2011
Building communities…Bridging continents. An incisive theme emphasizing RI’s local/global philanthropic efforts.
Zone 33 (ORC’s zone) is gearing up for the big push to assist Haiti Relief. PDG Vivian Mott and current Governor Ed Wyatt spoke to this issue and specifically the Donor Advised Fund established by the Foundation for RI’s relief effort.
While reading the WSJ today, I noted a front page article about hard times for the once strong United States’ charity sector.
The once booming nonprofit sector is in the midst of a shakeout, leaving many Americans without services and culling weak groups from the strong. Hit by a drop in donations and government funding in the wake of a deep recession, nonprofits – from arts councils to food banks – are undergoing a painful restructuring, including mergers, acquisitions, collaborations, cutback and closings. “Like in the animal kingdom…the weaker organizations will not be able to survive, says Diana Avia, chief executive of Independent Sector, a coalition of 600 nonprofits.”
In these challenging times, Rotarians have all the more reason to celebrate RI’s Foundation.
It’s nice to know some creatures can enjoy a high cholesterol diet. Be nice to the little tweeters outside with this sure to please recipe, suet cake.
2 parts melted fat (bacon fat, suet, or lard)
2 parts yellow cornmeal
1 part peanut butter
Mix all ingredients together and cook for a few minutes. Pour into small containers (tuna fish cans are good), and refrigerate or freeze until needed. Mixture can also be stuffed into 1-inch holes drilled in small logs to hang from trees. The recipe can be made all year long as long as you accumulate fat. Fasten containers securely to trees or feeders. (Recipe – from the Old Farmer’s Almanac.)
